- I know that Mr. Hornsby is jumping up and down with anticipation trying to figure out the type of 'valve gear' on that CRAMPTON loco. Vic said it was "outside Stephenson"!!
So Bob Hornsby replied:
- As for the Crampton locomotive having outside Stephenson valve gear, yes it does. Why not? After all Stephenson himself built some Crampton locomotives.
- One of the very popular British “Black Five” class 4-6-0 had outside Stephenson valve gear. The locomotive still exists and in operable condition. I’ve only seen one live steam loco with outside Stephenson valve gear.
- Here is a standard Black Five class. A great dependable loco in Britain and it only has two cylinders compared to three on most British locos. I am somewhat knowledgeable on British steam.
