Matt Nussbaum

Matthew "Mick" Nussbaum was born January 21, 1934 in Pittsburgh, PA and enlisted following graduation from Fairview Park High School in Cleveland, OH. Following duty in Corpus Christi, TX, he attended Airman Preparatory School in Norman, OK, then to Aviation Boatswain Mate Class A school in Philadelphia, PA. He spent one and half years in the crash crew at NAS Kodiak, AK and reported aboard USS Yorktown CVA-10 at Bremerton, WA in May 1955 asan AB 3/c, assigned to V-2 Division, Starboard Catapult. Leisure time found him in the photo lab pursuing his hobby of photography. Most memorable experiences aboard ship were the quality Liberty ports in Hawaii; Kobi, Japan; and Hong Kong. Upon promotion to AB 2/c, he went TAD to Master-at-Arms until his Honorable Discharge in August 1956, departing with Good Conduct, Korean Conflict and United Nations medals.

He hired out to the Illinois Central Railroad in Vicksburg, MS as a locomotive fireman, transferring to Special Agent's Department and returning to engine service in 1966 as a locomotive engineer where he remained until his retriement in 1988 with 32 years service. Currently he is a member of the Yorktown Association, Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Southwestern Live Steamers Club, where he operated his one and a half inch scale train at various tracks in Texas. Matt married Eugenia in Alabama in 1963; they have a son, Mick, and AMS 2/c aboard the USS Kearsarge; a daughter, Judy, a student at USM; and two grandsons.
