Shaft Diameter = d = 0.500"
Length of Shaft = l = 1.500"
Tensile Strength, Yield of 1018 Steel = f = 53,700 psi.

The formula for determining max load:

Formulas for calculating maximum load on round solid beams. Provided by Curtis F., Chaski.org.
Formula: (d^3 x f) / (5.0912 x l)
Therefore: (.500^3 X 53,700) / (5.0912 X 1.500) = 878.8 Lbs.

So a wheel set with 1/2" diameter journals can handle 1,757 lbs.

A two (2) axle truck can handle 3,515 lbs.
A two (2) truck car can handle 7,030 lbs.
