The Diesel engine was first designed and built for mechanical drive. It was much later that Electro-Motive incorporated this principle in designing and building a prime mover specifically for electric power generation.
It was, in fact, 1932 that two experimental electric power generating sets were tested at the Chicago Century of Progress Exposition. These two cycle engines were a revelation in design - compact and lightweight.
Refined and improved over the years, this advanced prime mover has been produced in quantity by Electro-Motive - enough, in fact, for a total generating capacity of more than 24,000,000 kw. Above all, this engine has proved its dependability, operating for thousands of hour under every conceivable conditions with only the most routine type of servicing.
Many utilities are already employing Mobile Power for peaking and reserve applications as well as emergency and maintenance work.
