A dog is a clamp used to fasten the door of the smokebox. There are typically several dogs around the circumference of the door in North American locomotive prototypes. The design is such that the dogs are not removed to open the door, but the securing nut is loosened enough such that the dog can be rotated 90 degrees.
Smoke box dogs used on 1-1/2 inch scale steam locomotives. Made from lost wax bronze. Customer finishes drilling out hole for 4-40 bolt mounting and file cleanup.
